One Matters Award: Faith UMC, Hallam - River Valley District

In partnership with Discipleship Ministries, the Susquehanna Conference presents the One Matters Award to one church in each of our districts at Annual Conference.

This award has a strong focus on making disciples because, by integrating into the church body, an individual may experience the personal transformation to potentially engage in the church’s mission for the transformation of the world. While most Discipleship Ministries programs focus on existing members, OMA focuses on new members. After all, ONE Matters.

The following congregations received the One Matters Award in 2025:

Freedom Trail District
Salem Guldens UMC

Mountain Valley District
Covenant UMC, Lockhaven

North Central Rivers District
Eatonville UMC & Evans Falls UMC

Northern Wilds District

Each summer, Faith UMC partners with three neighboring churches in Wrightsville to host a vibrant Community Vacation Bible School. Their preschool, serving 85 children, helps young learners build a strong foundation for elementary education. The church's G2 Youth Group shares Christ's love through simple acts of kindness - offering cookies during their annual Cookie Walk and serving hot chocolate and candy at the community Christmas Tree Lighting.

But their care for the community doesn't stop there. This congregation is passionate about feeding the hungry, hosting monthly food distributions that draw long lines of cars, and delivering food boxes to local seniors. In the past year, they have welcomed 9 new members and celebrated one baptism - clear signs of lives being touched and transformed.

In the small town of Millerton, nestled near the border of New York, Millerton United Methodist Church may be modest in size - but it overflows with life, faith, and love. This welcoming congregation is led by Betsy Huels, a Certified Lay Minister who serves three churches while working full-time. Her dedication to nurturing faith and community is inspiring.

Recently, Millerton's church family joyfully expanded. On Vision Sunday, two adults received the sacrament of baptism and six others became new members. The day was filled with celebration, dreaming about the future, and coming together to serve others by assembling food packages for those in need.

Moments like this remind us that hearts are still turning to Christ, discipleship is growing, and leadears like Betsy - and congregations like Millerton - are keeping the light of the Church burning brightly. Let us celebrate their faithful witness.

Nestled along Bowman's Creek in rural Northeastern Pennsylvania, just south of Tunkhannock, the Eatonville and Evans Falls United Methodist Churches are two small, historic congregations rooted in Christ's promise of abundant life. With average attendances of 26 and 17, these senior-age churches remain vibrant in spirit.

Despite the challenges of a shifting local economy and changing demographics, these congregations embody an "Attitude of Gratitude." They faithfully steward their resources, engage joyfully in misison, and remain connected to the wider Church. Their outreach includes weekly meal deliveries through the Endless Mountains Cooperative Ministry and Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen.

Rather than retreat, they're innovating. Last August, Eatonville UMC hosted its first-ever Vacation Bible School for Seniors. Modeled after children's VBS, it included worship, songs, crafts, games, and snacks - drawing participants from ages 17 to 85. The three-week event averaged 18 attendees and led to two professions of faith and a youth confirmation at Evans Falls.

One idea. One invitation. One life. In God's economy, every "ONE" echoes into eternity.

Covenant United Methodist Church in Lock Haven is becoming a beacon of light in its community. Since Pastor Justin Frear's appointment in July 2022, the church has embraced a renewed vision rooted in prayer, discernment, and relationship. With a new discipleship pathway, members are growing more confident in sharing their faith - through both actions and words.

Their outreach began with a local work camp, One Family at a Time, which is now a cluster-sponsored ministry that helps neighbors with essential home repairs. This inspired a Toolbox Ministry, offering year-round support for small home projects. The church also brings worship beyond its walls with an annual service in the park, creating space for those not yet ready to enter the sanctuary.

New minsitries are emerging organically - a grief support group launched by a visitor (now becoming a member) and the Covenant Cafe, offering care for those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Several connected through these ministries now attend worship. In this seaon of growth, the church has celebrated two baptisms and continues to bless the community by providing food to 60 local schoolchildren through Blessings in a Backpack.

Covenant is living its mission - one relationship, one neighbor, one life at a time.

One matters. One life is beloved by God, a soul previous in God’s sight. At Salem-Guldens United Methodist Church in Gettysburg, PA, that truth has come to life in powerful ways.

What began as a practical effort to raise funds for stained glass window repairs became something much more. “A few years ago, the windows needed repair and maintenance,” shared Rev. Mick Dawes. But the fundraisers turned into outreach events, and those who came were invited into the life of the church. Fundraisers became friendraisers, and friendships blossomed into faith.

In time, some of these new relationships grew into something deeper. After holding a Mission Possible workshop, the church set a goal to increase membership by 10%. They offered a Lenten membership class, welcoming visitors to explore the United Methodist Church’s history, beliefs, and practices. On Pentecost Sunday, four individuals professed their faith in Jesus Christ and became members.

In 2023, the church recorded no baptisms or professions of faith. In 2024, they celebrated four professions of faith and two baptisms - evidence of spiritual renewal. And yes, the stained glass windows were restored without taking a single loan. God is clearly at work in this beloved congregation, one person at a time.

Rev. Gary Weaver, Superintendent

The One Matters Award places a strong focus on making disciples because, by integrating a person into the church body, an individual may experience personal transformation to potentially engage in the church’s mission for the transformation of the world.

With the One Matters Award, we lift up the importance of discipleship and help interpret across the United Methodist connection that each and every soul matters. Every life matters to God, and every life should matter to us.

Of the many worthy recipients, the 2024 [River Valley District] One Matters Award was presented to Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church in Etters:

  • Whose staff and laity are dedicated to ministry and community connections.
  • Whose Profession of Faith numbers increased by 5.
  • Whose baptized 11 people since July of 2023 – a far cry from where things were.
  • And who celebrated a Confirmation Class of 11 people.

We also celebrate that this York County congregation was one of the first congregations to be designated as a Lighthouse Congregation in the Susquehanna Conference, a faith community geared specifically to welcome and support loyal United Methodists whose churches closed or disaffiliated. They live out a deep commitment to hospitality to help displaced United Methodists heal from the pain of losing their church.

The One Matters Award is exactly that: one matters. To go from zero professions of faith to one is something to celebrate. It brings to mind John 15 where there is much celebration in heaven over the one who comes into the fold. Accepting the award is pastor Calvin Miller and his wife Trina. Claysburg United Methodist charge is their ministry.

Claysburg UMC

Claysburg UMC went from zero to one in their professions of faith. On the other side of the spectrum, Weyant UMC went from zero to 13 professions of faith. The third church in the charge Queen UMC also had a profession of faith following additional professions of faith from the previous year.

Weyant UMC

A couple of the stories: one woman connected through the love of the congregation; the congregation supported her through a number of surgeries; she attended worship; she participated in the ministries of the church; and she could see God working in and through the church as well as in her own life. She especially grew through conversations of doctrine and in her understanding of grace.

Queen UMC

Another story: a single mom struggled with drugs for years. While on parole, following her arrest and serving her sentence, she entered and encountered the love and acceptance and support of these churches. She is baptized into a new life in Christ and growing in her relationship with Christ, she has gained employment, and the church celebrates that she has gained custody once again of her three children.

Through conversations, confirmation, and new member classes many are encountering God’s grace, love, forgiveness, and provision and experiencing the love and support of the faith community.

Some are beginning their journey through the churches outreach events  at Halloween, egg hunts, community days, a wild game dinner. Claysburg  UMC hosted back to school event and in addition to giving away school supplies and refreshments they offer a clothing giveaway and free haircuts. The children of Queen UMC held a spaghetti dinner and raised $900 for Operation Christmas Child. This small congregation also donates over 250 boxes for OCC each year. Weyant UMC kicked off “Building Bridges.” The seeds were planted by the previous pastor and stalled during the pandemic. Now every two weeks a dinner is provided and a study using the Bible Project.

Here are three churches and three communities doing some of the same ministries and some ministries that are unique to their setting—three churches in love with Jesus and shining bright in their communities.

Holy Trinity UMC, Troy (Williamsport District)

Rev. Paul Amara, former Superintendent

There are so many mission-oriented churches in the Williamsport Supervisory Area. It’s always difficult to choose one among the many for recognition for the One Matters Award.

This year, Holy Trinity United Methodist Church, located in Troy, was chosen for several reasons. Pastor Ken Brown is their pastor.

This church is growing! In 2023, nine new adult members joined the church with a profession of faith, including one baptism.

On Pentecost Sunday, the church also confirmed eight young people, six of which received membership in the church. This included baptizing three confirmands.

Kathy, the pastor’s wife, was their confirmation teacher, and at the youth’s request, with parental assistance, they started a youth fellowship program to allow the youth to continue to stay together.

On July 1, 2023, the youth met for their first meeting, and decided they wanted to meet weekly, immediately after worship on Sundays. Each week, they now gather with some of the youth members’ parents, who provide them with a meal and lesson.

This Youth group started with 8 members and at the end of 2023 the group had grown to 12 in participation. As a group, they also take part in conducting worship, often performing duties of reading scripture, as well as ushering, serving as acolytes, and playing music. They led the Tenebrae service on Good Friday.

The fellowship performs service projects and takes fun trips together. They have fundraisers and sales to benefit them monetarily, as they agreed to stay financially independent from the church.

The Youth also participate in several other mission activities.

They provide over 150 bags of food for the children in the Troy School District each week. With these programs, the Holy Trinity church is doing its part to help end food insecurity for the children in the Troy area.

The Holy Trinity church is growing and has become a beacon of hope and leader in the local community. With God’s grace they will continue to grow and bring the message of Jesus Christ to the Troy community and beyond.

May God continue to bless their ministries and missions.

One Matters Award: Mehoopany UMC, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre District

Every year, Discipleship Ministries partners with annual conferences by offering the One Matters Award (OMA) to one eligible congregation at each annual conference. At the 2024 Susquehanna Annual Conference, the One Matters Award was given to one church in each of our districts.

This award has a strong focus on making disciples because, by integrating into the church body, the individual may experience the personal transformation to potentially engage in the church’s mission for the transformation of the world. While most Discipleship Ministries programs focus on existing members, OMA focuses on new members. After all, ONE Matters.

Rev. Judy Walker, Conference Superintendent

Mehoopany UMC is a three point charge along with Jenningsville and Forkston. After several years of receiving zero new members, Mehoopany UMC welcomed two new adult professing members, through baptism and profession of faith in 2024.

Pastor George Price had received an email from the Find-a-Church site (a good reason to keep information updated!) that informed him of a couple seeking information. He contacted them quickly to find out their needs. They told him they were very new in their faith. They were new to the area, and had made the decision to give their lives to Christ. They were very eager to learn about scripture and Jesus.

Pastor George arranged a meeting with them to discuss the next steps.

They shared that neither of them were from church-going families and they went only for special occasions. They were never baptized and they felt that it was essential for them to experience this since accepting Jesus Christ into their hearts.

Their meeting was very informative and honest. In the past, they had experienced some people who went to churches who were not very Christ-like and they were unsure about going to church.

Pastor George spoke with them about baptism and acceptance into the family of God.

He really wanted them to experience worship and expressed to them the need for a church family that could help them in their new found faith. He encouraged them to give it a try.

He was very happy on Sunday morning to see them in worship. He met with them the next day to find out what they thought about their experience.

They were very happy with how worship gave them a new opportunity to experience Christ. They were encouraged by the response of the congregation to welcome them, and it turns out that they knew a few people. “They told me that they felt like they found their home and were ready for baptism and wanted to join Mehoopany UMC,” recalled Price. Two weeks later they were baptized and became members.

In his conversation about the church, they weren’t sure if they would commit to attending every Sunday. Pastor George and the congregation thank God that they have been faithfully attending every week and also helping at some events. Praise God for bringing them to Mehoopany.

The 2024 One Matters Award for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre District was presented to Pastor George Price and Mehoopany United Methodist Church.

One Matters Award: Greater Buffalo Run Valley UMC

Every year, Discipleship Ministries partners with annual conferences by offering the One Matters Award (OMA) to one eligible congregation at each annual conference. At the 2024 Susquehanna Annual Conference, the One Matters Award was given to one church in each of our districts.
This award has a strong focus on making disciples because, by integrating into the church body, the individual may experience the personal transformation to potentially engage in the church’s mission for the transformation of the world. While most Discipleship Ministries programs focus on existing members, OMA focuses on new members. After all, ONE Matters.

Greater Buffalo Run Valley UMC, State College District

Rev. Brenda Leigy, Superintendent

On December 4, 2014, the Holy Spirit moved through the Buffalo Run Valley and three United Methodist congregations: Buffalo Run, Filmore, and Valley View. The three congregations, after much discussion and prayer, took a step of faith to merge and become the Greater Buffalo Run Valley United Methodist Church. The newly formed pioneering congregation has worked diligently over the years to ensure that Christ’s presence will continue to be felt, heard, and seen in the valley.

The construction of the new church building has been decades in the making, beginning in 1999. With the growth and challenges of a 1930’s sanctuary the need was evident for a new sanctuary that could support the growing number of children, young adults, and the elderly’s needs.

Even though the transition had its challenges, the one church is now stronger, more proactive, and provides more robust programs and outreach into the surrounding community.

The Congregation believes that many years ago, God gave them a vision, not only to merge, but that the valley needed a facility where people could worship, grow in their faith,  and find fellowship and acceptance. The vision and the prompting of the Holy Spirit weighed on the hearts of many of the members and after many years of prayer and seeking God’s will, the time to begin was before the congregation and, as always in God’s perfect timing, the vision started to become a reality. Even, in the midst of a pandemic the congregation continued to move forward in faith.

When the opportunity to purchase land came about, the church members jumped to secure the space.

On April 15, 2023, Greater Buffalo Run Valley United Methodist Church broke ground on the lot for their new church building. Three crosses symbolically bearing the names of the three churches signifying the beginning of the new church where uncovered, while a cross with stones at its base bear the names of the communities in the Buffalo Run Valley and names of the faithful servants who are responsible for leading, directing and inspiring and believing in the vision and where God was leading.

Together, joyfully, and in the rain and some mud, in one accord we sang:

“I am the church! You are the church! We are the church together! All who follow Jesus, all around the world! Yes, we’re the church together!”

Construction began in May 2023, shortly after the groundbreaking.

Once the shell of the building was built, members of the congregation used their skills, talents, gifts, time, and hard work to begin the necessary work outside and inside, working together as the vision and reality continued to unfold.

Even though the church has numerous traditional outreach programs the congregation is committed and believes that they can reach out and make a difference in the lives of young adults through “out of the box” programs.

A few of these non-traditional “out of the box” programs that the church has implemented is a kids computer club, (a number of ten and 11-year-olds are now developing their own software programs) and this summer a model rocket club will be formed, teaching engineering design and aerodynamics with actual model rocket launches.

It is through programs like these that an 11-year-old young lady started coming to church and to Sunday school.

Shortly after, the holy spirit was on fire in this young lady. Her newfound love of Christ exuded from her and to say the least, was contagious. Her journey can also be attributed to the nurturing and support of the youth leadership. On her baptism day, the Holy Spirit could be felt throughout the church and she continues to be an inspiration to all around her.

The Greater Buffalo Run Valley UMC is continuing to reach out to the surrounding community and it clearly shows because the congregation is growing and even though they just graced the doorstep of moving into a beautiful new church on April 21, 2024, they may need an addition or a second service sooner than later!
